Roberto Magris – piano, electric piano, keyboards hammond organ ,mexican whistles
Denis Razz Alto and soprano sax, flute.
Karlo Iiic upright bass,electric guitar,oud.
Rajko Ergic drums, precussion, and soprano sax on
“Source of life” and “Echos fron the depth”.
The CD opens with a Coltrane number”Some other blues”Razz playing in a Parker
mood…. while Magris sparkles round him….inventive…touching on the blues
Iiic takes a Mingus influeced solo.
The next number is Razumovics “In Umbia” which takes an intersting turn.
Razz on alto paints an aural painting of an Italian seascape …. then Magris
draws from an interesting source ,the great Ray Manzarek… very original
and different….while Iiic and Ergic lay a path of rhythm.
Magris,Razumovic, and Ergic are co composers of “Source of life” which
opens like a prehistoric dawn… the musicians exploring a Sun Ra/ Art Ensemble
of Chicago inspired free space.
Shorters “Black Nile” comes across like a wide strong flowing river…
This number features Razz’s interesting soloing touching on free jazz ,
arab, and african music.,while Magris free improvisations remind me of
Cecil Taylor.
Both Magris and Iiic are co composers of”Double Matrix”IIic featuring playing
guitar influenced by Joe Pass ,leading to a free improvisation with Magris
….drawing in suble influences of Eastern European folk music.
Magris features on his own composition”II Mare a Fiume” …like moonlight
on dark water…guided by Iiic and Ergic.
Tyner’s “You taught my heart to sing.” …Such a beautiful and optimistic
take of this number…I feel rainbows … a multicoloured promise of better.
“Hill of Illusions” a Magris composition… featuring call and response between
bass and saxophone…. with Razz taking Ornette Coleman influenced improvisations.
Magris soloing touching on Ray Manzarek.making this recording even more musically interesting.
Lateef’s “The Plum Blossom “ features Karlo Iiic on oud and guitar and this
is awesome… showing tne influence of the great Gabor Szabo …. this works
really well like a caravan traveling through the mountains and steppes of central
asia. This is absolute magic.
“Spirits of the wild”composed by Magris,Razumovic ,and Iiic …. opens with
Magris playing mexican whistle along with Iiic’s flute. This is very haunting
sounding like Paul Horn and Ian Paul Cheneuor. I think musical detective work
would uncover similar influences.
Sun Ra’s composition “Disipline 27 “ like a two hand fingersnap leading to
beautiful expansive piano playing …. while Denis Razz references Parker and
Ornette Coleman in his soloing.
“Echos from the depths” ( composed by Magris,Razumovic,“and Ergic)
Atmospheric keyboards ,bass and Ergic on soprano sax…..showcase Razz
drawing from East European folk music and Ornette Coleman… leading to
interesting musical fusions.
“In Action” (a Magris composition) ….I admire the skill of Ergic … soloing
then dropping into a sudden free space …. Magris sparkling out to the edge of the blue horison.
“Lanquidity” (composed by Sun Ra) the music fractures into fragments of sound.
Interesting guitar soloing from Iiic like John McLoughlin on Bitches Brew.
A beautiful sparkling take of Waldrons “Left alone” …. like a lonely street at midnight.
Razumovic’s composition “A means Antonia” suble drums
and bass .Magris on keyboards….sparkling like reflected starlight …. Razz… touching
on bebop .
Roberto Magris features on B3 organ for the Jimmy Smith number “You’ll see”
snapping my fingers to the swinging beat, so cool like a New York cooking session.
Funky and in the spirit of the blues.
The Washington Young number “My foolish heart” … I love Magris more contempory take using keyboards rather than acoustic piano , and Razz touching
on Parker with something of his own.
I am a repairman and builder …. and as I reach into my toolbox for the right tool
(for a repair or New Build ) these musicians reach into their toolbox of what they
have learnt from the great jazz musicians ,to build a CD.
