There are three Magris compositions …. Optional Man, Broken Barriers, and Inner Love. Theme for Ernie(Lacy) ,Village Blues (Tyner) and Lament (Johnson).
Brambock, and Matosic touch on their influences …. mellow autumn day swing,…. bebop Parker ….. searching for and finding the multi coloured possibilities ….Coleman inspired ….clouds of gold …. The intensity and power of John Coltrane.
….that makes up their post modern style.
Magris piano sparkles with a freshness… like cold water bursting from a mountain
spring ….with hints of Tyner and Monk. Trees expoding into pink flower
as winter looses its grip.
Matosic and Gajo are the perfect rhythm section …. supportive and subtle….
a majesty like diamond stars on black velvet.

This features three Magris compositions”No more blues”,”Song for an African
Child” and “Iraqi blues”. And….. “For Tomorrow (Tyner) – Joycie girl(Pullen).
“If you could see me now”(Dameron) ,”Stella by Starlight”(Young),”My one and only Love” (Wood), “In Love in Vain”(Kerr).
There are a lot of musical interplay between the drums ,bass , and piano. All
talking to each other musically.This reminds me of the Alan Broadbent trio
concerts in the Auckland Art Gallery over 30 years ago ,One with Alan playing
piano,Putter Smith on upright bass,and Frank Gibson Jnr on drums.
Being a live concert it is a chance for aspiring musicians to learn from the greats.
At a 1990s Art Gallery concert I remember one muscian telling another how
they could learn from an Alan Broadbent melody line…. to advance their musical knowledge.
Drums and bass not just timekeeping but a three way contribution to the music.
Musically lots of influences come into this live recording … blues (Red Garland)latin(Carlos Antonio Jobim) Eastern European folk jazz( Rein Rannap). exploding into Cecil Taylor free improvisation… like shards of broken multicoloured glass.
Using a quote from the John Wain Jazz novel “Strike the Father Dead”(and
altering it for this review … Roberto Magris knows how much of Cecil Taylors
inovations he wants to incorporate into his music.
Romance and love (so many of the great standards are about that)..like lovers in spring daffodils… warm rain falling from an overcast sky…. these are the mind
pictures these talented musicians create.
“Iraqi Blues” is inspired by middle eastern music ….percussive , and a meeting
with Jay McShann’s grandson Jason in 2006. Jason spoke (of his shocking experience
serving as a soldier in Iraq , and about the cruelty and,futility of war) to Roberto
Magris.
