This was an interesting singer/guitar concert.
Paul started off with hard and funky soloing (with a touch of the blues). leading into the Scott Heron song “You can call on Lady Day”.
“Who we are”… soloing Paul drew in music from everywhere … lyrical and beautiful…. a Gabor Szabo influence.
A song about Aretha Franklin…. with a jazz tinted approach.
“The things who hurt me so” …a Bob Dylan feel.
“Smile with that special smile” … soloing like Gabor Szabo…. sunshine sparkling on water. Paul has a wonderful vocal range to fit this wide range of songs.
“Mama says go to sleep” … a song by Bert Jansch “When sadness fills your heart”.
I was very impressed by Pauls brilliant take on “Norwegian Wood” soloing off
the melody bringing in Central Asian Gabor Indian blues… a jazz magic carpet ride
to Tashkent and Samakand.
The set finished with the original “Do you remember me”… an influence of Dylan
in the guitar soloing ….. right to the top of Pauls wide vocal range.
Paul shared his experiances growing up in 1960s London….. the wide choice
of musical entertainment ….. Ten shillings to watch Jimi Hendrix perform.
….. Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club …. the great Bert Jansch.
The second set opened with the “The Golden Gate” (Bob Dylan guitar riffs)
“My Lucky Star” …..”Fools and Kings” ….. musicianship exploding over the
fingerboard …. with a Pat Metheny and Gabor Szabo flavor.,,, blues turned
inside out.
“Bird without a song” (about a friend who died from a drug overdose) soloing
like a horse running free on the great steppe.
Going out with a blues tune “Hoochie Coochie man”… the solo was something
else. The songs both originals and covers are well written …
