This concert was a fusion of jazz/rock and hip hop.

During the 1990s acid jazz (as it was called then was popular), and my friend Roberto Magris toured Europe with his own band DMA.

In Australia there was the popular band “Directions in Groove” with its hit single “Two way dreamtime”.

I was delighted to attend a concert by a current band using all those elements, performing songs from their new album “Time Cycles”.

The band opened with “Miller”… with Mazbou Q showing a strong Bob Marley influence in his vocals( this is something I like to see … after all I attended Bob Marleys Auckland concert in 1979.

Quentin touched on Benson/Montgomery ….call and response with Moto…..bopping and popping like Stanley Clarke ….leading to an intense drum driven improvisation by Kenneth. The bass was very melodic (one of the bestI have heard since the Herbie Hancock concert)….. a cascade of Scofield influenced blue notes from Quentin.

I was very impressed with Zoe Sparks vocal range ….and her songs “Whiplash” (about meeting someone from the past)…. and another …. very personal about having a crush on a popular boy at the age of 19…. all the time there was incredible musical support from the rhythm section… with Quentin soloing in the style of Joe Pass and Jim Hall.

Mazbou Q singing about breaking up without bitterness … bringing that Bob Marley influence out… high energy vocal flow like a saxophone… the singers and musicians had it going on. Helen and Elizabeth featured on the song “What have we done”

“Time Cycles” had a flamenco feel … like a smoky bar in Spain … with sensitive drum work ,beautiful melodic bass and guitar soloing… uplifting the vocalists and making their performance better.

Zoe Sparks sang “The way you see the world” with a Joni Mitchell influence.…. guitar soloing in the style of Joe Pass … painting a romantic night sky full of stars

I will have to say it again ….the musicians and vocalists merging into a powerful musical performance.
