Laclu Album release 4/9/24
Keith Price – guitar, Francesca Parussini – alto saxophone, Max Crook – drums.
The concert opened with blues based guitar improvisations, over light cymbals…alto sax came in like a wall of sound….. collective improvisation….and a beautiful light touch on the drums…while Keith walked the musical line between the African and Arabic worlds.
Brushwork like silver in the air…while Francesca melded blues with Ornette Coleman… something of great beauty.
Drums this is the drum…. out of Africa… very subtle….sax improvisation like a sun scape meeting a thunderstorm of drums…. very melodic guitar solo mixing solo runs and chords…. into full force in the style of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Sax fluid like Coleman…hard colour shapes…sparking from a full fingerboard guitar solo…Drums exploding with subtle guitar and sax joining in for a flamenco soundscape of Spain.
Blue Monk…with Keith brilliant at transposing that blues drenched Monk tune to the guitar… echoed by sax…. a vision of 1940s Harlem…twisting together the blues and free jazz.
Keith paints a musical picture of a foggy day filling a rough hilly sea scape… sax in the spirit of Coltrane cuts through like sunshine…making rainbows on the water droplets …. Francesca plays a Randy Brecker influenced solo…while a drum storm blows in from the west.
Keith draws on his Hendrix influences… with drum patterns swirling behind him…. sax and drums come in for a full Art Ensemble of Chicago improvisation…. while Keith references Monk… Francesca plays an inspired tribute to the great Bob Marley “No Women no cry”.
This final improvisation paints visual images of gulls … floating on the wind above surf breaking on the rugged west coast cliffs.
