Ben Turua: bass, Julien Dyne: drums percussion, JY Lee: saxophone/flute , Joe Kaptien: keyboard /trumpet, Cameron Allen: saxophone /keyboard, Finn Scholes: vibes /trumpet, Matt Hunter: percussion and choir.
Finn opened with an electric Carl Djader vibe…. JY Lee took off on a hard urban Micheal Brecker groove…. very impassioned…The choir reminded me of the Quincy Jones orchestra( Gula Matari and Walking in Space)….a full range drum storm like Art Blakey ….Finn soloed on trumpet…making a poweful statement mixing in influences as diverse as Randy Brecker and Louis Armstrong.
A Mike Nock influenced keyboard solo…like colourbars suspended over a wine dark sea.. then mixing in some Hancock funk…. an Armstrong influenced attack on trumpet…into powerful vocalese…keyboard line like a dancer, intense like Mike Nock ….a Djader influenced two hand fingersnap….Freddie Hubbard influenced trumpet like Finn’s influences…bass rocking like Ray Brown….keyboards out there into skyspace…leading to a call and response from Julien…to a flute solo of great beauty…. this music has an exciting intensity …backed by the six piece choir JY Lee soloed in a North African flamenco mood…into Hancock keyboards …and funky Bobby Hutchenson style vibes.
Flute opened like the great Yuseff Lateeh…with the choir opening the music up to wider possibilities…This part of the concert felt like a CTI concert…the influences…Bob James, Milt Jackson, Billy Cobham, Stanley Turrentine, By this time this poet said nothing at all …just sat and let it all be…JY Lee soloed on soprano sax…a funky latin groove…burning with hot blue Coltrane fire.
I brought my friends Jos and Leonie along to hear the possibilities of jazz improvisation.
