Of the eight tracks on the CD six are written by Roberto Magris.. the only exception is “Black Coffee”(Webster Burke) and “The Changing Scene”(Mobley).
This reminds me of Haydn Sherley’s radio program “Music to Midnight” from over forty years ago…elements of big band, bebop and latin….a band playing in a Californian roadhouse (during the 1940s)…overlooking a moonlit seascape.
On the Magris standard “Together in Love” and “Black Coffee” Monique does everything I expect from a jazz singer … finding all possible spaces….. a trombone solo… a deeper shade of blue… a Coleman influenced sax solo….Roberto mixing Monk and the Blues…. over Pablo’s exotic latin touch.
The music takes off on “Hong Kong Nightlife” … an Ornette Coleman flavored saxophone solo…while Roberto shows his Eastern European jazz influences…explosive Rein Rannap… sparkling to the edge of the sky…. while I write this review …(.outside I hear a pacific island drummer playing outside somewhere….clicka clicka to the poly beat..). a bass powered solo walk like a two hand finger snap.
This CD is so uniquely Roberto Magris sparkling into a whirlwind…. yet with a romance too…a couple dancing close and slow…lost in love …. at the moonlit night Californian roadhouse ….
Everything is going on ….post Parker bebop ,Coleman ,Rollins…elements of big band and latin … yes Haydn would have enjoyed this …. his tastes were far more modern than the brief of his program.
