Callum Allardice guitar; Thomas Botting bass; Luke Sweeting piano; Hikirangi drums;
The concert opened with a gentle grandeur, guitar sounding fresh and new…notes soaring into the night sky. Luke took the theme …. playing subtle like Alan Broadbent…. I felt the piano, bass, and drums were providing great support to Callum. Listening to the guitar was like drinking a well aged wine with the taste of past summers …. the influence of Pat Metheny.
“Solitude”(a track out on Spotify) …like the cat that walks by itself in the damp ,dark woods. Callum had a singing quality….with very fluid soloing …. drawing us in to the heart of the music… Luke had an Alan Broadbent approach ….. ripples spreading out on calm water. Flowing rock harmony drum driven into chords of power.
“Deep Thought”…. very much a Joe Pass/ Jim Hall approach …..a romantic star filled night… beautiful subtle brushwork… bass reminded me of Putter Smith( he recorded with Alan Broadbent.).
“Peaceful” ….. a gentle intensity like a snowmelt stream racing through spring green fields ….Callum takes up the theme from Luke …(.like Rein Rannap ) … widening out to a great river ….I love the colours the bass and drums bring.
“Darker” Night overtaking a fading summer day …. city lights reflecting the stars …. a great romantic epic. “Odyssey” like an ocean voyage …. sun silver on the waves… Luke displays an East European influence….an incredible Rein Rannap like beauty. The last number had a hard rock feel… like beasts of Finnish legend spiraling like smoke into the great winter dark.
