ROBERTO MAGRIS EUROPLANE FOR JAZZ

FREEDOM IS PEACE

This recording features five Magris compositions and three standards. There is the expansive, positive feel reaching back to the first 1990s EuroplaneOrchestra recording.

The Magris composition “Freedom is peace” introduces the musicians…..Tony Lakatos on tenor and soprano sax…. a fluid Colmanesqe solo.Trumpeter Lukas Oravecs Davis/Hubbard flavored solo.Alto and baritone saxist Florian Brambock (an orginality inspired by Coleman). Then Roberto Magris solo drops into a secret world… leading to free soloing over the hard driving rhythm section of Rudi Endel bass and Gasper Bestoncelj drums.

On the Magris composition “The Island of Nowhere”Lakatos and Brambock touch onColtrane Parker and Coleman (in the world of jazz saxophone playing they are the Men!!!!).Magris solo sparkling like light through a dark sea…touching on a Jobim bossa nova rhythm leading to Art Ensemble of Chicago style soloing.

“Malay Tone Poem”(Galeta) features Engel soloing over the full range of the bass…like Charles Mingus.Magris references Monk(like Herbie Hancock did at the Auckland concerrt.

With jazz piano Monk is the man. When a critic during the 1960s called Monk old fashioned,Miles Davis growled”If Monk is old fashioned I am white!!!”.Lakatos,Brambock, and Oravec draw on East European folk music for inspiration….like the Slovenian hills on a hot summer day.

The Standard “Leverne”(Hill) has a mellowtone feel … a touch of Ellington .All the musicians enhancing the soloing of Lakatos, like a diamond set in twenty four carat gold…something of great beauty.

“Something to save from the EU”(Magris) .Magris draws from Eastern European folkjazz(Rein Rannap) for his imspiration.then is the style of Pete Jolly.(but not really).Five years ago with the help of my wing lady Vasi…we did some jazz detective work and found out Roberto Magris and Pete Jolly had the same influences.Red Garland, and McCoy Tyner.

Bertoncelj is quite something on the drum kit…being subtle as well as loud.

I remember bad New Zealand pub cover bands with bad drummers who would drown everything out with a repeditive boom bang bing bang crash.Fortunally I don’t have to go out to those venues any more.I really enjoy everything musical Bertoncelj brings to this recording.

Though the rest of this CD “When you touch me “(Sharabi)and the Magris compositions “Loose fit” and “Hip for the conference”continues on with the same high musical standards bringing together themes from Europe and America..
