TAMADIMI-INDIAN JAZZ FUSION

AT THE PAH HOMESTEAD

5 March 2025

Manjit Singh – Tabla and percussion

Daljeet Kaur-vocals

Olivier Holland – bass

Micheal Howell-guitar

Alan Brown-piano

with special guest….

Shalu Garg- sitar.

The concert opened with tabla’s and sitar(reminding me of the Rolling Stones “Paint it Black” ) but so much western music has been influenced by India. An incredible danceable rhythm of high energy.

Shalu painted a picture in music of the Ganges River flowing through a hot dry land of great history .Alan Brown responded with Mike Nock influenced colour bars, like two lovers meeting in the sky above a world apart.

“From the banks of NZ 90 mile” Driven by the tabla’s and piano …the music soared over the west coast… waves breaking on the long beaches …. guitar coming in like seabirds floating in the wind .

A song sung by Daljeet …. a full vocal range, over McLoughlin influenced guitar…touching on flamenco, Micheal weaves elements of so many cultures together. A theme for India and America.. musically embracing the middle east and eastern Europe.

“Bantu” Manjit soloed as the master he is over the whole range of the tablas ,scatting over the top. explaining how his solo is based on the play of a ball in cricket. There was an incredible duet with the piano..(in the style of Eastern European Rein Rannap)… as fresh as a new morning.

“A piece from Shaki” Had a strong John McLoughlin influence …. driven by the bass and tabla’s…guitar dropping into an Indian key. Alan Brown taking a solo on electronic keyboard in the style of “Weather Report”, bass popping and bopping like Jaco Pastorius.

“Homage” Alan Brown opened like an orange dawn…cascading colour bars…this is a Sufi song about love…. and Daljeet brought all the passion of a young woman in love into her singing.

The concert finished with a Raga…Shalu was brilliant ….her sitar playing crossing into blues… the heat of the Mississippi delta meeting the heat of the Ganges…. embracing over Africa.
