I never thought I would attend a concert with five encores. But it happened. On this incredible evening in Dortmund, the entire hall simply refused to stop asking for more.

And so it happened — five times.

Pat Metheny has always had a particular love for intimate, small-group formats. In fact, many of his finest recordings — from his early ECM albums to his later work for Geffen and Nonesuch — have been made in such settings: solo, trio, or quartet

The same is true of his latest album, Side-Eye III+, released in February 2026. The Dortmund concert was part of the guitarist’s tour supporting the album.

With the Side-Eye III+ project, Metheny once again demonstrates his remarkable versatility and endless creative curiosity. Joined by a young quartet, he presents specially arranged compositions, soaring improvisations, and a sound that moves effortlessly between lyrical delicacy and explosive energy.

Of course, the evening also included some of his finest older material, with pieces from Bright Size Life80/81 and other landmarks from his vast catalogue. There were also several pieces performed solo on acoustic guitar — moments of remarkable intimacy that offered a completely different perspective on Metheny’s musicianship.

It was an evening that brought Metheny’s artistic legacy back to life in a vibrant, contemporary format, while also showing just how fresh and relevant the sound of modern jazz guitar can be today.

And then came the five encores — the cherry on top.
